Looking for an easy-to-use design platform to help your in-house team create quick-form content such as social media posts, simple videos or internal communications?
I’ve been comparing Canva and Adobe Express to see which platform is better suited as a secondary design tool for our clients.
To be honest, both are great options, so I’ll share more about what sets each apart to help you decide which one is best for you and your team.
Since its launch in 2013, Canva has rapidly transformed how people access and engage with design. It became a popular browser-based design tool that allowed beginners to create content without needing advanced design skills.
In October 2025, Canva launched its Visual Suite 2.0, which has allowed users to start creating in an all-in-one workspace – a big upgrade!
In 2016, Adobe launched its browser-based design tool, “Adobe Spark.” In 2021, it rebranded to Adobe Express and has since evolved into a unified editor that integrates powerful Adobe Firefly generative AI features.
Both platforms are set up similarly, using dashboards and drag-and-drop features. They are straightforward to navigate, with primary menu controls on the left-hand side, along with prominent search bars for quick access to templates and other design features.
When you open a template or start a new document, you'll find an intuitive top menu that updates as you interact with different elements on your document.
Canva offers a broader template selection and allows you to design using their mobile app.
Adobe Express offers a cleaner, more intuitive navigation experience, including more accessible layers panels for complex designs.
Professional Design Suites
In 2025, Canva acquired Affinity, a free, professional design suite. It allows direct file exports from Affinity into Canva.
Adobe Express works similarly with Adobe Creative Cloud, including direct imports from the major apps like Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.
Both have professional design suite integrations, Adobe Creative Cloud is the industry standard, so the integration is much more impactful and seamless.
Brand Kits
Canva and Adobe Express simplify keeping your brand top of mind by leveraging their Brand Kit features.
Brand Kits enable you to upload your brand elements such as logos, colors, fonts, photos, icons, etc. This helps ensure your work is consistent with your brand no matter who is logged in under your team account.
Adobe Express can also be linked to Adobe Libraries, which allows users to automatically pull colors, fonts and graphics directly into projects.
Fonts
Currently, the two most popular font libraries are Adobe Fonts and Google Fonts. Both offer a wide range of fonts that can be integrated into websites and design tools. However, Canva and Adobe Express handle the font libraries differently.
Adobe Express has fully integrated Adobe Fonts into its platform, while also allowing custom font uploads (just ensure you have the correct licensing), including Google Fonts.
Canva includes many Google Fonts for your use but not all. You can also upload your own custom fonts (with the correct licensing).
Canva, however, does not allow any integration with Adobe Fonts. This can cause problems for businesses that are currently utilizing an Adobe Font in their brand.
Stock Assets
Canva acquired two stock sites, Pexels and Pixabay, providing over 141 million images, videos and audio.
Adobe Express has integrated its own stock assets site, Adobe Stock. Their royalty-free collection has over 200 million photos, videos and audio.
While both platforms have a large library of assets to choose from, Adobe Express provides higher-quality assets.
PDF Imports
Uploading a PDF can sometimes give unexpected results in Canva. Elements may be grouped together, or text may be imported incorrectly, making it difficult to edit.
Adobe created the PDF in 1993, so PDF imports into Adobe Express are often seamless. Elements can be individually selected, and text is imported correctly. This allows for easier and quicker editing.
Video Editing
Video integration into each tool has improved dramatically over the last couple of years, making a once-daunting task simpler and much more accessible to beginners.
Canva provides a more intuitive multi-track timeline with more animations and transitions. It works well for producing video content quickly.
Adobe Express has a more straightforward interface that has exciting features such as Clip Maker, Enhance Speech, Self-Record and Social Safe Zones.
AI is a big topic of discussion nowadays. Most seem to be using it in some capacity, and the design world is no exception.
Canva Magic Studio is Canva’s AI suite, which includes tools like Magic Design, Magic Eraser and Magic Write.
Adobe Express has integrated its own generative AI technology, Adobe Firefly, into the platform, including features like Generate Image, Remove Object and Generate Text Effects.
It’s important to note that not all AI is ethically sourced, and it may create future legal issues for your company if not properly vetted.
Canva has not been as transparent as Adobe about the training data used to create their AI models. Adobe Firefly references libraries like Adobe Stock that have clear consent and adheres to strict protocols of the Content Authenticity Initiative, meaning its AI content is commercially safe.
Canva’s AI models are not transparent about where they get their training data, meaning it could be stolen from real creative works that don’t have explicit permission for use, violating copyrights for artists and creatives.
Teams can collaborate, review and edit designs together in each platform.
Canva has more robust folder sharing and team admin tools. This is helpful for teams that need more oversight and management. Cloud storage varies by plan, but for the Business plan you will get up to 500GB.
Adobe Express offers more basic collaboration features, including shared projects and the ability to invite collaborators. Cloud storage varies by plan, but for the Business Team plan you will get up to 1TB.
Both platforms offer free versions with basic features; however, their paid subscriptions unlock advanced tools and resources that are necessary for teams.

Adobe Express subscription tiers:
Adobe Express is a much more economical option, and if you already have a qualifying Creative Cloud subscription, it is already included at no extra charge!
Canva is a great choice for beginners who can't afford professional services or want to explore their creative side. It is also better suited for teams that need more robust folder sharing and permissions.
Adobe Express is a better choice if you already use Creative Cloud, value premium fonts and high-quality assets, and are concerned about commercially safe AI practices.
As an Adobe user myself, I prefer Adobe Express. It makes the most sense to me because of how I already create.
Since I’ve been in this field for 15+ years, I design primarily in the main Adobe Apps (Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign), so the transition of working between those apps and Adobe Express is smooth. I can start a project in InDesign, transfer it into Express with a click of a button, then hand it off as a template for the client to use as needed. The process is quick and seamless.
Both platforms are continuously updating and adding features to enhance the user experience, so it is vital to stay informed so you can make the best choice for you and your business.
